How the ATM Scam Works
- Thieves are putting a thin clear, rigid plastic "sleeve" into the ATM card slots.
- When you insert your card, the machine can't read the strip, so it keeps asking you to re-enter your pin number.
- Meanwhile, someone behind you watches as you enter and re-enter your number.
- Eventually you give up, thinking the machine has captured your card and walk away.
- The thieves then remove the plastic sleeve complete with card, and empty your account.
- Be aware…run your finger along the card slot before you put your card in.
- The sleeve has a couple of tiny prongs that the thieves need to get it out of the slot, and you will be able to feel them.
- Pass this information on to your friends and family.

Tip of the Month
To ensure a safe and happy 2003, here is the "around-the-house" safety tip that homeowners can resolve to follow this month:- March (Poison Prevention Week, March 18-24): Lock poisons out of children's reach. According to the National Safety Council, nearly 300,000 people each year suffer from poisonings, with more than 6,000 cases resulting in death. One way to prevent poisoning is by storing all cleaning supplies, hazardous chemicals and medications out of reach of children and in a locked cabinet.
