Lawnmower Accidents

Stop Taking Chances Now
Especially This Summer

This Newsletter is my way of sharing information helpful to keeping you and your family safe, informed, empowered or entertained.

  • Did you know that significant numbers of persons are seriously injured or killed each summer from lawnmower accidents?

  • Yes, each year lawnmower accidents regularly result in the loss of fingers, toes, and even eyes. Tragically, still other lawnmower accidents cause permanent brain injury and deaths.

  • One of every five deaths caused by a lawnmower involves a child.

  • The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that most of the deaths to children occur when a child falls off the riding mower and is run over, or when a child is in a moving mower's path. Sadly, in nearly every situation, those tragedies can be prevented if parents or guardians take a little precaution.

  • Injuries and deaths from lawnmower accidents can be reduced dramatically if we all follow the following general safety tips.

    1. KEEP CHILDREN OUT OF THE YARD WHILE MOWING THE LAWN.

    2. NEVER ALLOW YOUNG CHILDREN TO MOW THE LAWN.

    3. RIDING MOWERS CAN BE DANGEROUS.
Passengers should NEVER be allowed on a riding mower. Don't use a riding mower to mow areas where the lawn slopes.

    4. ALWAYS PREPARE YOUR LAWN FOR MOWING.
Check your lawn for items such as sticks, rocks, toys, sports equipment, dog bones, wire and equipment parts. Make sure miscellaneous items are not hidden in tall grass. The debris could be thrown while mowing, possibly hitting the operator or bystanders.

    5. HANDLE FUEL WITH CARE.
Always use care when filling the tank with gasoline. Wipe up spills. Never fill the tank on a mower that is running, or has been operating and is hot. Finally, never smoke or use any type of flame around gasoline.

    6. WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND SHOES.
Wear long pants and long sleeved shirt, gloves and eye protection to protect from flying objects. Wear close-fitting clothes and no jewelry to protect from something getting caught in moving parts. Wear hearing protection. Do not operate a mower barefoot or in open sandals. Wear sturdy shoes with slip-resistant rubber soles.

    7. CHECK GUARDS & SHIELDS ON YOUR MOWER.
Be sure you know how to operate the mowing equipment. Know where the controls are and what they do, especially the shut of switch. Don't remove or disable guards or other safety devices.

    8. USE A MOWER WITH AN AUTOMATIC BLADE CUT-OFF.
Use only a mower with an automatic blade cut-off on the handle. And stay behind the handle for several seconds until the blade stops after releasing the blade control bar. Never reach underneath a mower while it is still operating - even if the blade is not spinning. If you need to remove debris or check the blade, disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

    9. DON'T CUT GRASS WHEN IT'S WET.
Wet clippings will probable clog the discharge chute and ultimately could jam the blade and shut down your engine. When you need to remove clippings form the chute, the rotary blade must be stopped and the engine turned off and disabled. Wet grass may also cause the mower or your feet to slide because of the reduced traction.

    Employee Profile

I am very pleased to introduce Marta De La Torre. Marta started her legal career at Bisnar & Chase. She started as a part-time temporary office assistant nine years ago and has progressed through quick learning and diligent effort to the manager of the pre-litigation team. And she does an excellent job of it! The pre-litigation team collects medical records, initiates investigations, preserves evidence, handles property damage claims and negotiates rental car reimbursement.

Marta is also Bisnar & Chase's head Spanish translator and is the liaison between our Spanish speaking clients and the office. Marta assists with depositions and deposition preparation of Spanish only speaking clients. She has translated all of our documents and forms into Spanish.

Marta was born and raised in Santiago, Chili and moved to California 22 years ago. She perfected her English at Fullerton College and Cal State University at Los Angeles. Marta then earned her Paralegal certificate. The rest is history and we are very proud of her!

Marta says, "I like working at Bisnar and Chase because my best friend works there and everyone else is like my family. The attorneys have always been very supportive of me and my continued learning. When I started I was fresh out of Paralegal school. I owe all my training to Bisnar & Chase."

When she is not at the office Marta stays busy with her husband and three children. She loves music - all kinds of music - and is interested in playing the cello.

    Tip of the Month

To ensure a safe and happy 2003, here is the "around-the-house" safety tip that homeowners can resolve to follow this month:
    • July: Clean your outdoor grill after each use to prevent grease buildup that can catch fire. Even after cooking the grill will remain hot, so be sure to keep children away.
